Applauding the Modern Office

I have been a software engineer for all of twelve(12) years, have practiced yoga for ten(10), and taught yoga for three(3) of those years,  yet I have never thought of approaching coworkers concerning the possibility of becoming yoga students. For whatever ethical reason which instinctively surfaced, I simply did not mix the two circles. Students who came to my class were either brought in via the studio at which I taught, or were found in intimate circles outside of work.

Lo and behold, some coworkers who knew I taught yoga marched straight into head office and requested that a yoga class be accommodated on site, with "yours truly" as the teacher . The thought was that the hours at the office were so long, that many employees were finding it difficult to fit exercise into their busy schedules. I watched in wide-eyed disbelief as it was approved by the Human Resources Department, all the necessary documents were signed and voila! - believe it or not -we have a yoga class starting tomorrow.

It makes me want to take a second to applaud the modern office all over the world. In Japan coworkers are encouraged to take regular sleep breaks, in India they are being encouraged to take stretch breaks and in America the larger more successful companies are recognizing the need for a good work/life balance.

In fact everyone of us should be proud of the era that we are a part of, since we are collectively realizing that addressing the Whole Self works to the benefit of employees and employers.

Namaste
