Yoga and the Blocked Eustachian Tube

You know we should never underestimate the power of this thing called Yoga.

All of last week I was walking around with a blocked Eustachian tube and as a result I lost a significant amount of hearing on my left side.

So I went to Whole Foods and tried every product available for the health of the ear canal: Garlic Oil, Tea Tree Oil and Grapefruit Seeds, and though I am sure they are respectable products in their own right, they did not alleviate my condition.

I also went to my homeopath and my physician and diligently took the items they had prescribed. I got relief from other  symptoms but not from the heaviness in the ear.

So I decided to put my discomfort aside and attend my yoga class on Saturday. As is customary I told the teacher about my health issue for the week at the beginning of class.

Surprisingly she had a very useful response.  She said she was familiar with the issue because she herself had experienced it. From her observation of herself in practice, it happens when whole inner shoulder habitually rises towards the ear.

Then the aha moment:

'What side of the body do you carry the baby on?'

'The left', I responded.

'For this week switch sides and see if that doesn't provide some relief'.

As advised I went home and kept carrying the baby on the right side instead of the left and sure enough I felt instant and measurable relief.

I backed this up with poses like Handstand(Adho Mukha Vrksasana) and Wheel Pose(Urdvha Danurasana) that are very beneficial for shoulders and was able to hear significantly better by the end of the weekend.

That is the power of this thing called yoga.  With the sensitivity and awareness of self gained through practice, it puts its pracitioners in a better position to self-detect and self-correct when something is amiss within themselves.
